Smashbox was a shortlived I.R.S. act consisting of ex-Go-Go Gina Schock whose first "post-Go-Go" band, House Of Schock had broken up, ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson, (The Artist Formerly Known As) Prince's Wendy & Lisa and B-52's bassist Sara Lee.
Although this "powerhouse" line up seemed to be a "surefire hit," the conflicts between so many creative spirits shook up the band and by the time Miles Copeland agreed to sign them in the Fall of 1991, only Gina and Debbi remained.
The pair began writing and recording their debut album in ernest, but before they could finish the full LP's worth of material, creative differences between the two veteran female rockers (and a bit of reported tension from Peterson's manager/spouse Steve Botting) took their toll. In 1992 Gina left.
Debbi auditioned for new partners, finally deciding on Siobhan Maher, formerly lead vocalist of The River City People
The new duo then changed the name of the band to Kindred Spirit. Go to the I.R.S. Corner Kindred Spirit page to learn about crazy legal battles and how this story ends!
