Not a whole lot of info is available on this cult punk/novelty act. According to the liner notes on the Oglio Records collection The Obscurity File, Angel & the Reruns were an "all girl, all ex-con band" that "found the light in TV Reruns while serving time in County Jail." This is actually pure fabrication -- Angel is in reality one Hillary Carlip.
Hillary Carlip is actually an extremely talented performer. She formed Angel & The Reruns when she was only 14. Without really knowing what they were doing they produced a single that, thanks to airplay by Dr. Demento and the crazy DJs on KROQ (Los Angeles) at the time, became a sort of underground hit... "Buffy Come Back" was a catchy ditty about the young girl on Family Affair who died of an overdose in the 1970s. The flip-side, while heard less often, was the scathing diatribe "Beaver Cleaver Fever" set against another TV family classic, Leave It To Beaver. Despite their elevated cult status, Angel & the Reruns broke up, reuniting just long enough to produce the song that appears on the Bachelor Party Soundtrack (and therefore qualifying them to appear on the IRS RECORDS CORNER), "Why Do Good Girls Like Bad Boys"... Aside from Hillary, the other "Reruns" were: Julie Christensen, Perla Batalla and Nancy Scher.
Hillary has appeared in countless movies, TV shows and has
worked as a stand-up comic, juggler, fire-swallower (fire swallower ?!?!?) and screenwriter (An Extremely Goofy Movie is among her credits). She
has written a book for young women called Girl Power and has been an instrumental force in
the "Girl Power" movement. With Francesca Lia Block (of Weezie Bat fame) she collaborated on
The Zine Scene, another book for young women. She is one of the founding Partners of
Voxxy.com, an empowerment/advocacy website for young women from
every walk of life. At left, the notorious cult single that started it all and, at right, Hillary Carlip today.
Mr Bill would like to thank HC ("Angel") for her gracious contributions to this page and her kind words of support!
